Did you know that estrogen acts as a buffer to the physical effects of our stress response? Prior to menopause estrogen enhances the ability of the body to return to a rested and recovered state. As estrogen declines in perimenopause and menopause the buffer declines resulting in a more dramatic response to stressors such as heightened anxiety, insomnia and elevated blood pressure. The inability to effectively manage stress can shift our bodies to an almost constant “Fight or Flight” response. I describe it as having a short fuse, reacting to even small stressors with a heightened response. Sound familiar?
